Encore: “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”

“Education is not filling a pail but the lighting of a fire”. ~William Butler Yeats

It’s back to school season which serves as a time of new beginnings more so than New Years Day for those of us deeply entrenched in the education system. The mornings of sleeping in and the days of living according to my own schedule (which would actually be no schedule) are over I have to admit to feeling a twinge of excitement. Ok, it’s more than a twinge and rather little waves of excitement.

I really REALLY like the beginning of the school year.

But don’t tell anyone.

A new school year means all things new. Obvious things like new books and pens and scribblers. It also means new sweaters and shoes and haircuts. But most excitedly it means new teachers and friends and classes and learning.

Hope runs high, everyone is optimistic and there is an exciting buzz in the air.

Even those who didn’t pass a class or two the year before have set some goals and seem determined to succeed. At least this is a mind set for the first week or two.

I wish the newness could last the entire year. The excitement of being “back”. The excitement of starting afresh. I have to figure out a way to sustain the optimism especially when daylight is getting shorter and we’re deeply entrenched in midterm season. But in the meantime I’m going to just enjoy the newness and the sparkle the first few weeks bring.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a complete Pollyanna. Realistically there is a curmudgeon or two in the hallways who grumble and begrudge the fact they have to attend…

but those teachers usually come around.
